Long Sweep vs Short Sweep Cementing and Circulating Hose Loops

The oil and gas industry demands highly durable and flexible equipment for critical well service applications. Among the most essential tools are cementing and circulating hose loops, designed to safely transport fluids like cement slurry, mud, and fracturing fluids under extreme pressure. Selecting the correct type—Long Sweep or Short Sweep—is vital for optimizing performance, safety, and operational efficiency.

Long Sweep Hose Loops

The Long Sweep Hose Loop is engineered for the most rigorous and abrasive applications. Its defining characteristic is the long radius bend, achieved by using specialized swivel joints and pipe sections.

Product Specifications & Features:

Pressure Rating: Standard CWP of 10,000 PSI and 15,000 PSI. Higher ratings (up to 20,000 PSI) are available for extreme deep-well operations.

Swivel Joints: Integral steel swivel joints, frequently utilizing Style 10 and Style 50 configurations. The long radius design minimizes erosion, extending the life of the hose when handling abrasive fluids like cement slurry and fracturing fluids.

Connections: Often feature high-pressure, quick-connect wing union end connections (e.g., Fig 1502) for fast and reliable make-up/break-out.

Short Sweep Hose Loops

The Short Sweep Hose Loop offers a more compact and economical solution, ideal for lower-pressure duties where space or a tight bend radius is a factor.

Pressure Rating: Typically rated up to 6,000 PSI CWP.

Swivel Joints: Commonly employs Style 50 swivel joints, offering excellent multi-plane flexibility. Lower pressure options may utilize threaded connections instead of integral wing unions.

Applications: Well testing lines, standard circulating lines, water injection, and general fluid transfer applications that do not involve extremely high pressures or highly abrasive media.

Key Advantage: More compact for easier storage and transportation, with sufficient flexibility for many general well service tasks.

Feature

Long Sweep Hose Loop

Short Sweep Hose Loop

Bending Radius

Larger, smoother bend (Long Radius)

Tighter, sharper bend (Short Radius)

Internal Flow

Maximized flow characteristics, minimized turbulence and pressure drop.

Higher potential for turbulence and pressure drop.

Primary Use

High-pressure, abrasive services (e.g., cementing, fracturing, acidizing).

Low-to-medium pressure utility lines, well testing, and circulating lines.

Cold Working Pressure (CWP)

Typically 10,000 PSI and 15,000 PSI (up to 20,000 PSI available).

Generally lower, around 6,000 PSI.

Swivel Joint Styles

Commonly uses Style 10 (one plane of rotation) and Style 50 (two planes of rotation, or full 360-degree rotation in one section). Often integral connections (no threading).

Primarily uses Style 50 swivel joints or lower-pressure threaded connections.

Both hose loops are indispensable for well servicing operations, including:

Cementing: Used to pump cement slurry downhole to secure casing strings

Fracturing (Fracking): Connecting pumps to the wellhead for high-pressure fluid injection

Acidizing: Pumping corrosive acids to stimulate reservoir production

Well Testing & Circulation: General fluid delivery and temporary flow lines

By offering both the heavy-duty Long Sweep and the versatile Short Sweep, we ensure that our customers have the right tool for every pressure and flow requirement, guaranteeing safe, efficient, and compliant operations across Europe.

Enhance Your Flowline Control with PME High Pressure API 6A FIG1502 FSL 3 Sour Gas Equipment

We're proud to introduce our core line of API 6A-compliant flow control and piping components, engineered for maximum performance in the most demanding environments, including H2S service. These products are essential for safely and efficiently managing high-pressure fluids in oil and gas operations.

PME high-pressure equipment can be manufactured to the highest industry standards (PSL 3) and features the FIG 1502 connection, ensuring reliable, leak-proof performance.

All products adhere to API Specification 6A and are built for H2S Service (Sour Gas), meeting stringent material requirements to prevent sulfide stress cracking.

Product Uses and Applications

These components are vital for maintaining control, integrity, and safety within well control and production systems:

Adjustable Choke Valve (2" FIG 1502): Essential for precisely regulating and controlling flow rate and pressure in drilling, well testing, and production lines. It helps manage sudden pressure fluctuations and prevents damage to downstream equipment.

High-Pressure Tee (2" FIG 1502): Used to divert or combine the flow of high-pressure fluids, providing a reliable branch connection in a piping system while maintaining full pressure integrity.

90-Degree Elbow (2" FIG 1502): Used to change the direction of flow by 90 degrees. Its robust construction is crucial for handling the significant thrust forces and maintaining integrity at high-pressure turns.
